Australia is the fifth-largest producer of liquefied natural gas (LNG) globally, and approximately 90 per cent of Australia’s reserves are located off the coast of Western Australia. Perth hosted the 18th International Conference and Exhibition on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG 18), bringing together the largest number of LNG industry leaders and papers in the event’s history.
In 2016, more than 8,000 delegates visited Perth to attend LNG 18. The conference began with an evening welcome reception at the State Reception Centre at Fraser’s in Kings Park. The Prime Minister of Australia was the special guest at the event, which began with a traditional Aboriginal ‘Welcome to Country’ smoking ceremony. Delegates were invited to move through three separate areas and take part in cultural experiences including whip-cracking, photo opportunities with a koala or baby kangaroo, and observing Aboriginal artists at work. Speakers in the opening plenary session included CEOs from Chevron, Shell and Woodside Petroleum. The program of speakers featured the largest number and highest level of LNG industry leaders ever brought together in one place, and more papers and posters were presented than ever before in the history of the conference series.
An accompanying exhibition space contained 160 exhibitors from 30 countries. Technical tours included visits to Woodside’s North West Shelf Project, Australia’s largest oil and gas development. Feedback from delegates confirmed that the LNG 18 convention and exhibition was a great success, clearly demonstrating Perth’s ability to host large-scale conventions and business events.
