Create a piece of Aboriginal-inspired art
Learn about Aboriginal arts, crafts and customs with a dot painting workshop at Voyages Ayers Rock Resort. Local artists explain the techniques and guests are invited to create their own dot painting. For larger groups of 30 or more, Voyages can arrange a series of outdoor activities to run in conjunction with the dot painting workshop, including punu (woodcarving) classes, traditional tool demonstrations and a bush medicine experience.
Paint a surfboard
Banana Life in Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast offer a Surfboard Graffiti Art class where guests are given the chance to paint their own surfboard. Local artists are on hand to help design, spray and stencil each board. Once finished, the boards are lacquered and freighted to the guest’s home address.
Crack your own macadamias
The macadamia is endemic to Australia, which is also the world's biggest grower of the nut. Summerland House in Alstonville, located 40 minutes’ from Byron Bay, is a working macadamia and avocado farm set on 172 acres of pristine tropical hinterland. Visitors can take a Tractor Tour around the farm and learn all about growing and harvesting macadamias, as well as watching the de-husking process in action. Guests can try their hand at cracking one of these hard nuts and there is a range of delicious plain and flavoured nuts to take home as souvenirs. The Tractor Tour operates seven days a week and there is a cafe and function centre on-site that can seat up to 120 people using the outdoor terrace.
Blend a bottle of red wine
The Barossa Valley in South Australia is one of Australia’s premier wine regions known for producing premium full-bodied reds. At the Penfolds Barossa Cellar Door in Nuriootpa, guests are taken through a wine tasting, and then invited into the lab for a blending session. Visitors are given the chance to blend their own red wine using Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre grapes from the Penfolds vineyards, which is then bottled to take home.
