International Mass Spectrometry Conference 2024
With its strong research ecosystem, history of innovation, and growing commercial impact, Australia proved to be the ideal host for this landmark scientific conference.
The International Mass Spectrometry Conference 2024 (IMSC2024) is the premier global event dedicated to mass spectrometry—a powerful analytical technique used to identify chemical compositions by measuring mass particles and molecules.
Established by the International Mass Spectrometry Foundation in 1958, the biennial conference brings together scientists, researchers, and industry professionals to explore advancements, technologies, and real-world applications across pharmaceuticals, food chemistry, environmental science, and more.
Held in the Southern Hemisphere for the first time, IMSC2024 was hosted by the Australian and New Zealand Society for Mass Spectrometry (ANZSMS) at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC), from 17-23 August 2024. Attendees engaged in keynote presentations, technical workshops, and discussions addressing emerging trends and the role of mass spectrometry in tackling global issues, from medical diagnostics to climate change.
With a strong focus on collaboration and knowledge-sharing, IMSC2024 fostered innovation and connections that will continue to drive the future of mass spectrometry.
“My perspective of Australia since my last visit has changed and in a very positive manner, because I've seen how Australian research has grown across the years and the productivity and the innovations that are coming out of Australia have grown tremendously.”
– Prof. Ron Heeren, President of International Mass Spectrometry (IMS) Foundation
Hosting IMSC2024 in Australia highlighted the country’s leadership in scientific research and mass spectrometry innovation. Australia’s universities and institutions are producing groundbreaking advancements, particularly in environmental science, agriculture, and healthcare. By holding the conference here, local researchers—especially early-career scientists—gained international exposure, fostering new collaborations and career opportunities.
Australia’s proximity to Asia attracted a large number of delegates from that region, while the destination’s global appeal drew attendees from Europe and North America. The combination of a premier academic event with Australia’s renowned natural beauty, wildlife, and Indigenous culture made this an unmissable experience for many attendees.
Melbourne’s strong reputation for hosting international scientific events, alongside the expertise of the local organising committee, ensured seamless event execution. The MCEC, with its state-of-the-art facilities, provided the perfect venue for fostering knowledge exchange and showcasing the latest advancements in mass spectrometry.

One of ICMS2024’s most significant legacies is the financial support it has provided for future research initiatives and travel grants for early-career researchers. This ensures that Australian and New Zealand scientists continue to contribute to global mass spectrometry advancements.
Beyond financial benefits, the conference created invaluable networking opportunities, allowing young researchers to engage with global experts, build professional connections, and access future career and collaboration opportunities.
IMSC2024 also reinforced Australia’s reputation as a world-class destination for scientific conferences, showcasing the country’s research excellence and innovation on an international stage. By bringing together international talent and supporting the next generation of scientists, the impact of this event will extend far beyond the conference itself.
“Melbourne Convention Bureau was absolutely instrumental in us winning the bid to host the conference here. The support we received from them as well as Tourism Australia, enabled us to show that we could put a financially viable program together that allowed us to attract international delegates.”
– Gavin Reed, IMSC2024 Conference co-chair
