Meet a planner
Meet Judi Froehlich, CMM, CIS Global Strategic Solutions Director, Motivation Excellence, Schaumburg, Illinois, USA. Judy recently brought a group to Australia to explore Sydney and Hayman Island. She told us why Australia has extraordinary appeal for an incentive program.
How would you describe Australia’s appeal for incentive groups?
One taste of Australia is all it takes to understand the extraordinary appeal! Australia is a highly desirable incentive destination, offering an extraordinary range of experiences that many participants may never have the opportunity to enjoy on their own.
From breathtaking natural landscapes and iconic landmarks to world-class dining and exceptional hospitality, Australia delivers an authentic and memorable experience. Its diverse regions provide something for every group and budget—from vibrant cosmopolitan cities and pristine beaches to the rugged outback and unforgettable adventure encounters.
Participants can enjoy truly bucket-list moments—sailing across Sydney Harbour, snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef, indulging in private vineyard experiences in renowned wine regions, or embarking on immersive outback adventures. Each experience is designed to inspire and create lasting memories.

What was a program highlight from your recent groups in Sydney?
While we curate a variety of experiences that consistently receive exceptional feedback and top survey scores, many participants were simply captivated by the beauty of Sydney itself. The “wow” moments often came from the city’s iconic scenery—particularly that unforgettable first glimpse of the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour. Those moments set the tone for an extraordinary incentive experience.
Is there a venue in Sydney you would book again?
One of our favourite discoveries was the historic Sydney Town Hall, which served as the perfect setting for our farewell dinner. Renowned for its Victorian architecture, the venue was transformed through stunning lighting, elegant décor, and memorable performances by a local children’s choir and the venue’s magnificent organist. There truly was not a dry eye in the room. The exceptional food and flawless service delivered by our catering partner elevated the experience even further. It reinforced an important lesson: collaborating with the right partners is key to creating unforgettable events.

What dining experience would you definitely include in an incentive program?
Sydney offers something for every taste and interest. Whether guests are passionate foodies seeking the city’s top restaurants, looking for a spectacular waterfront view, eager to explore the local fish market, or simply wanting to enjoy an authentic Australian meat pie, there are endless options.
For groups visiting The Whitsundays, I would highly recommend an upscale seafood barbecue on the beach. With pristine white sand underfoot and breathtaking coastal views all around, it is a uniquely Australian dining experience that guests will remember long after they return home.
What was a uniquely cultural experience that delegates enjoyed?
One particularly meaningful experience was being welcomed to Hayman Island by the resort team and participating in a traditional smoking ceremony led by an Aboriginal Elder and storyteller. Native plants were burned as part of a cleansing ritual intended to ward off negative spirits and invite positive energy. Throughout the incentive, delegates gained a deeper appreciation for First Nations culture, history, and the profound connection Australians of all ages have with the land. It was a powerful and memorable experience for many attendees.

Was there a surprising moment your delegates will talk about many times over?
While we curated many unique experiences for the group, some of the most memorable moments came from allowing participants the freedom to create their own adventures. We intentionally selected a resort located just minutes from Circular Quay, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House, The Rocks, and many other iconic attractions. Each attendee received ferry tickets, spending allowances, local recommendations, and support from our on-site team to explore the city during their free time.
Hearing the stories that emerged and seeing the photos shared through the event app was priceless. Many participants told us they wished they had a few extra days, as there was still so much more they wanted to discover.
What was an experience on Hayman Island that you want to do again?
Affording guests the opportunity to experience their own near private island is very special in itself but the true experience and pampering begins the moment you step onto your luxury boat transfer to the Island.
However, we found that the helicopter tour over the Great Barrier Reef, experiencing the brilliance of nature, Heart Reef and a surprise touch down on pristine Whitehaven Beach created a lasting memory.

How many days is the ideal time for an incentive group on the ground in Australia?
The overall incentive budget and event history play a key role in the decision on the number of days spent in Australia or any destination. Initially, my clients were not certain there would be enough to offer attendees for five nights in Sydney for the main group, and after conducting a brief site visit realized quickly we would leave the participants wanting more! The top tier winners enjoyed three more nights on Hayman Island and couldn’t say enough wonderful things about the length of visit and unique offerings.
What would you say to clients who are thinking about hosting an incentive program in Australia?
Just do it! Your attendees will be talking about it for years to come. Start with conversations with Business Events Australia for inspiration and explore incentive offerings/rebates! If you have concerns about budget or flight time, my suggestion is to do a side-by-side comparison with other destinations and you might be pleasantly surprised with the amazing value and affordability, especially with the current exchange rate.
